Jon Scieszka was named the Inaugural National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature by the Library of Congress. Yes, this sounds like a big deal. But really, if it was a big deal it would have been done long before now. Like, let's say that Jon had been named Ambassador to the Court of St. James's. (That's what we officially call our ambassador to the United Kingdom. The U.K. consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain consists of England, Wales, and Scotland. So one person is the ambassador to England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.) Now that would have been important. John Adams first held that title (back in 1785!), and he went on to become the president of the United States as did James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, and James Buchanan. Other famous people have held the job, like Robert Todd Lincoln, Andrew Mellon, Joseph Kennedy, W. Averell Harriman, Walter Annenberg, and Elliot Richardson. That's an impressive list.

To answer the question you are undoubtedly thinking: Yes, you have to address him as "Mr. Ambassador." At least to his face. Then there's this ring thing, but you don't have to kiss it right now because Jon is a bit paranoid of the flu. He likes to be carried around in a chair, but we understand that this is optional.

So please humor Jon by showing up at one of his two speeches. (I know, you're asking, "why does he get to give two speeches." The answer is, "because.") We might ask you to help lift his chair and carry him around in a circle for a while. It depends what kind of mood he is in. And do tell him that he might someday be president.

We also hope he has a sense of humor.
