January Events at Little Shop

Little Shop Is Closing
for three days: Friday, December 31st through Sunday, January 2nd
We at Little Shop will be ending the old year and starting the new year with our families.  We'll be back to our regular schedule on Monday, January 3rd.

Caldecott Storytime!
Sunday, January 9 | 3 p.m.
The 2011 Caldecott and Newbery Award winners are announced by the American Library Association on January 10th.  We're going to get warmed up by reading picture books from past Caldecott Medal and Honor winners.

Wendelin Van Draanen, Author of the Sammy Keyes Mysteries, is Launching Her Newest Book at Little Shop! - SORRY, BUT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED!
Tuesday, January 11 | 4:30 p.m.
The author of the GREAT Sammy Keyes books -- Wendelin won the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Juvenile Mystery for the first book in the series -- is out with The Running Dream.  Being the very first stop on Ms. Van Draanen's tour and being the day the book is being released, Little Shop is hosting the release party!

The Running Dream, written for ages 12 and up, tells the story of Jessica Carlisle, a high school track star who loses a leg following an accident.  Here is Wendelin's take on her book.  We look forward to seeing you!

Special Martin Luther King, Jr. Storytime
Sunday, January 16 | 3 p.m.
We'll be doing a special storytime in honor of Dr. King.  Join us in celebration of this courageous civil rights leader.

Penguin Storytime
Thursday, January 20 | 7 p.m.
In honor of Penguin Awareness Day -- I'm not making this up -- Little Shop will be doing a special storytime.  Waddle on down!  We'll be reading Penguin's Snowy Day, Your Personal Penguin, Tacky the Penguin, and more.  As always, milk and cookies will be served.  Wear your PJs!

DecaturDocs film Hey, Boo: Harper Lee & To Kill a Mockingbird
Saturday, January 22nd | 8 p.m.DecaturDocs presents a film about one of Little Shop's favorite books, screened at the Decatur High School Performing Arts Center. Director Mary Murphy will also be signing copies of her book Scout, Atticus and Boo: A Celebration of 50 Years of To Kill a Mockingbird. More info at

Dan Gutman, Author of the My Weird School Series, is Launching His Newest Book at Little Shop!
Monday, January 24th | 7 p.m.Author Dan Gutman is probably best known for his great My Weird School series, but he's written dozens of other books and won a ton of awards.   Best of all, he's coming to Little Shop!  Dan will talk about his brand new book, The Genius Files: Mission Unstoppable.  Dan even has a trailer for this book.  Do you want to see it?  Then look here.  Go ahead, I'll wait.

The book is about Coke and Pepsi McDonald, almost thirteen-year-old twins who travel the United States and (sort of) save the world.  It's a fun, action-packed adventure book for readers ages 9 and up.
Rick Yancey, Author of the Monstrumologist Series, is Coming to Little Shop!
Saturday, January 29th | 4 pmWe are super excited to welcome Printz Honor winning author Rick Yancey.  The Monstrumologist, Rick's 2009 book, has been called "a cross between Mary Shelley and Stephen King", and tells the story of Will Henry, an orphan apprenticed to a doctor specializing in the study of monsters.  In the new sequel, The Curse of the Wendigo, Will and the good doctor must track down a mythical- and terrifying- monster before someone with evil intent does first.
