Wendelin Van Draanen Event Canceled

Wendelin Van Draanen, who lives in California, made her way some 2,200 miles to Atlanta last night.  But it's the last six miles that are tricky.  Given the road conditions, we are canceling today's event.

This is a true bummer.  I've made it 3/4ths of the way through The Running Dream, and was really looking forward to meeting her today.  The book deals with a high school track star loosing her leg in a bus accident.  It sounds like it would be a sort of depressing, introspective book.  Instead, it is a page turning, introspective book.  It's a pretty daring attempt to pull off by an author, but Wendelin does so successfully.

We're open this morning, but will be closing early.  Like soon.  If you're coming to the shop, please call first to make sure we'll be open.

It's disappointing, but completely understandable. Hopefully we can lure Ms. Van Draanen back for her next book release.

We don't know her plans, but we truly hope to have Wendelin back to Decatur at some time. We love her Sammy Keyes books. Her new book, The Running Game, is really superb. It is the kind of book that we can sell to people by saying, "It's about this girl who looses her leg. I know it sounds like a downer (how could it not be -- at least in part), but it really grabs you. You won't be able to put it down."
